This is the first edition published in Maine. With the engraved bookplate of Harold Marsh Sewall of the Bath shipbuilding family on the front pastedown. He was appointed Consul General to Samoa by President Glover Cleveland where with his knowledge of ships, shipping and commerce by sea he worked feverishly in pursuit of American interests in Samoa. So vigorously that he was relieved of this
assignment by the Secretary of State.
The name Samuel Hopkins Dart(mouth) College 1826 is penned on the front endpaper.
This volume was acquired from well-respected antiquarian bookseller Francis O’Brien of Portland Maine, who has noted in pencil on the pastedown that Harold Sewell was also a friend of Robert Louis Stevenson. Item #727
