Lafayette Twitchell Elizabethtown IL CA 49er Pikes Peak 59er

Archive of twenty plus letters to Angela Twitchell of Elizabethtown, IL. 1859-1908. Most from the late 1900's. Four letters are from the Marrow family (relatives) in the Chester area of SC dated between 1859-1861. All have some small references to Gold City and the Gold Rush at Pike's Peak where Lafayette had gone. The longest reference is: "Let me know if Lafayette has returned or what he sent you from the gold mines-there has been but a man who went from Chester, he went with a company, he was wrote that one are nor soe (sic) much rich has reported he says they had a hard tome crossing the plains on the 25th of May they had a severe storm and two of the company froze to death". The rest of the letters are family news or sympathy letters on the death of Lafayette in 1908. It is interesting to note that Lafayette went to California gold fields in 1849 and Pike's Peak in 1859.
