SIGNED. Martin's Gallery, Saint Paul, Minnesota. c.1860's. Fine condition. Signed in ink on the lower blank margin. "Ever Faithfully Yours, H.B. Whipple, Bishop of Minnesota." Whipple, 1822-1901, was the first Episcopal Bishop of Minnesota, remembered for his untiring advocacy on behalf of Native Americans. It was partly due to his influence that Abraham Lincoln pardoned 265 of the 303 Dakota Indians sentenced to hang in the aftermath of the 1862 uprising. Item #3851
