The Mormon Battalion, the only religion based unit in U.S. Military history, served during the Mexican War. A volunteer unit commanded by regular U.S. Army officers, it made an epic march from Council Bluffs, Iowa to San Diego, opening a southern wagon route to California that helped secure new territory in the American Southwest.
